Actually, the safe was not level (it was noticeably leaning forward and to the left - it just never occurred to me that that would cause a problem with such a big cast iron safe). The second locksmith who came out immediately noticed that the door appeared to be siting on the frame and he tried to find a way to pry it up, but becuase there was no gap, he could get a prybar between the door and the frame and could seem to figure anyother way to lift the door while trying to open it. Then he jacked up one corner and placed a couple of boards under one leg to level it, but the door still owuldn't budge. That's when he started talking about trying to drill it, but he said he had no idea where the bolts were and he would have to try the hit and miss route.

When he left he said that it was possible that after the safe sat on the boards in its new level position for a while it could open right up, but he suspected that it since it had been sittng there unopened for over a year that it was not likely.
