Thanks for the input. I read the NC statute before posting but I was hoping there was a "work around" as it appears that you must be a locksmith's apprentice in NC before you can legally possess lock picks.

I'm 56 years old and have always been fascinated with the subject and thought I might get a small set of picks and try my hand at it here at home on some old dead bolts, etc.

Good point on the manipulation aspect, I guess I could always practice the art on combination locks and small safes....

I might check and see if there is a locksmith in town that would let me "apprentice" under their license but I doubt I will have any takers - liability issues, etc.

If lock sports are legal in your state - enjoy!
