I'm requesting info on an old safe I have come across. I don't currently have a lot of information on it except that it has "Diebold Safe & Lock Co - Canton O." printed on the top portion of the safe and "R.L. Barnes Safe & Lock Co, Dealers - Richmond, VA" printed on the bottom of the safe. It also has "The People's Savings Bank" printed at the very top of it. The safe measures 53.25"w x 71.5"h x 32.5"d, and is on casters. The safe works, although when I was last there I could not get it open with the combination I have (I do know for a fact I has been opened in the past several years). The safe does have an inner safe that I believe is on combination also, and inside of that is lined with red velvet. The inside of the safe is in great condition but the outside needs to be cleaned up (no paint, just dirt & grime). The safe has historic value as well as it was originally used as the town safe for the town of Halifax, NC, which is where the Halifax Resolves were signed which led to the Declaration of Independence. This safe was used until the bank was built, I believe in the 1920's, so I would say it is over 100 years old. Any information on age, weight and value would be greatly appreciated, and it is for sale if anyone is interested. Thanks in advance for your help. |
