Japanese Safes Washing Up

Posted by Scott Milwaukee on April 10, 2011 at 19:48:52:

Any opinions on the recent report that many home safes in Japan were washed out to sea in the March tsunami and are now washing back up on shore? Over US$300 billion (in yen) is suspected stored that way throughout the country.

Apparently a lot of Japanese, especially the elderly, don't trust banks, don't like ATMs, find keeping money at home convenient, are offered near zero interest from banks, etc.

Given the lightweight construction in Japan, I doubt you could secure a safe in many homes, especially against a 30 foot wave. Perhaps an enterprizing safe tech could offer a volume discount on opening them.
