. JJ Taylor is somewhat a passion of mine, mainly since it is uniquely Canadian and precious little information is available about them. Notwithstanding that they manufactured safes in Toronto for many decades, there seems to be almost no mention of them in the Toronto Archives.

JJ Taylor manufactured safes up until the late 1950’s, I believe, in Toronto (16-24 Front Street, is the address I read on the backplate of a particularly nice safe, I believe) until purchased by Mosler, Inc., an American company. Not long afterward, Mosler-Taylor was purchased by Chubb in an effort by Chubb to branch into Canada. Chubb is a UK company. Chubb-Molser-Taylor is a name you will still find on bank equipment to this day, despite the fact that Chubb only kept the other 2 names for about 10 or 20 years.

Taylor made bank equipment, including security and fire vault doors, cash safes and office safes. The models they made, they made for long periods of time, so it’s not really possible to nail down a precise date of manufacture. However, 178 may very well be a serial number.
