Safe deposit services have always been a high potential liability loss leader for banks. If they charge enough to profit there are far fewer takers. As for people not using them as much as they should, there is and always has been much (not unwarranted) mistrust about others being in possession and control of personal property. Also, safe deposit limits uders to bank hours and at least a degree of scrutiny, despite the supposed inherent privacy of the arrangement. If you buy a safe with a reasonable to very good level of security you pretty much don't have to worry about valuables stored at home, plus you get the conveniece of anytime access with zero oversight. |
