Just idle curiosity. I was recently in a bank in Milwaukee that had such a door, I think by Mosler and perhaps 30 years old. I had never seen one like it and wondered why they appear to be so rare if they have some clear technical advantage. I stumbled across the photo (that I can't link to because of the HTML spam filter) of the one at Mt. Pony.

The door itself could be lighter (less strain on hinges?) since it doesn't have the lock, doesn't need hardplate, etc. I didn't take a good look at the bolts, but I could imagine them slding from behind the wall into slots in the back of the door.
