Depending on vintage your safe could be either a hand change or key change combination. A hand change is pretty straight forward but should still be done by an experienced safe tech. A key change requires a special change key to change the combination. Since you're relatively near the Binghamton area I would call someone in that area and have them change the combination which will give you a properly working safe and guarantee you will be able to open it when needed...
