This has me wondering if there may be a slight "tilting" of the key inside of plugs that don't have tight tolerances.

By that I mean clockwise / counter-clockwise, and not bow to tip.

The bottom pins would then contact the key near the edges of the cuts instead of exactly in the center.

If that were the case - the exact contact point could vary, depending on how quickly the turning action is applied and how sloppy the "fit" is, of the key in the keyway.

Just a thought...
