Actually Yale did give S&G a run for dominance for much of that time. but in the grand scheme of the development of the combination lock they are not that much different. From your description I believe your lock is a Yale model "HE", made specifically for HHM and is a simpler version. Yale and S&G's best locks went mostly onto the bank vaults and were extremely well made bronze beauties. I recommend getting a copy of John and David Erroll's new book on locks and timelocks, "American Genius". Neither your lock nor the 1866 Sargent lock I mentioned are in the book but there are several other early Sargent and Yale locks as well as many other makers. Really nice book.
