Aaron, generally speaking there aren't any "How-To" safe service and repair books offered to the general public.

If you choose that do-it-yourself route you'll mostly be relying on your own mechanical abilities and deductive skills. To be sure, there are much harder things to figure out, but simple as they might be, safes are among the most unforgiving mechanisms when it comes to mistakes.

If you're thinking about buying a used safe:
be sure you have the correct combination and that you know how to work it,
be sure the dial, bolts, and bolt control handle operate relatively smoothly
be sure the door swings open and closes without huge effort or sagging and rubbing on the jambs or sill
