Hi, I'm trying to find help with opening an old safe. The safe is probably over 100 years old and has Emerson & Nail Co on the front (the company that originally owned it I would guess). There are no other markings or plate on it. It's a large safe, maybe 4.5 feet tall, 2.5 feet deep, 3 feet wide type of thing of heavy cast iron. (I have pictures I can send if you can let me know an email address.)

It has an alpha key dial and uses a 5 letter combination. I know what the combination is, I just don't know what the turning sequence is to make it work. I was told you turned it 10 times to the right to clear it, then 5 times around to the left to the first letter, 4 times around to the right to the second letter, etc., but that doesn't seem to work. I've tried it both directions, also turning past the letter it's on 4/3/2/times etc. to the next letter.

Any ideas on what the correct turning sequence would be or how to get in it?

Thanks,
Larry Crawford
