Karen, in most cases you can't change it unless you know it in the first place.

Otherwise a thief who didn't know your combination but knew the change procedure could walk up to it, change it to something he or she did know, open the box, empty it, close and lock it again, and leave you wondering what happened after it didn't open on your known numbers and was found empty when you later paid a technician to open it.

You'll need to hire a technician to open the box unless you can dig up the numbers.
