Bill, Yes, there are vault doors on Wall Street that are OVER 4' thick, closer to 5'-6' thick if memory serves me right. I used to service them when I worked for a bank servicing company. The amazing thing about these doors, is that 1 man can open and close them. The floor drops away to allow the door to swing open. These doors are still in use to this day. A weight of 100 tons is entirely possible with these. I didn't try picking one up, but am quite sure that I couldn't. One location that I remember working on had at least 6 different vaults in at least 3 different sub-basements. As for what they can stand up to, I would never be able to figure that one out. The only thing I know of is if it was shot by a 12" gun, then I don't want to be anywhere near it when it happens. The second thing I am pretty certain of, is if it gets hit, it's probably not going to open again. Consider the force of the impact, and the expansion of the door into the frame. Bill E. CML |
