Happy New Year and all that on December 31, 2007 at 11:24:45:

Hi Doug:

Happy New Years and all that Too!

I have long suspected that Remington and Sherman safes and vaults were produced under license by another company and just marketed under the R&S name but I never really had the time to check into it.

I have a copy of a Remington and Sherman catalog.

Although the catalog is not dated there is a date of 1892 on a "testimonial" about their exclusive use of "Franklinite" for barrier protection with the catalog so I assume the catalog came shortly thereafter. Here's what it says:

Messrs. Remington & Sherman Co.
New York, November 16, 1892
1227 Market Street
Philadelphia

Gentlemen:- We hereby agree to make for you, and you exclusively, the Franklinite Burglar-Proof Iron, patented by our own Mr. James R. Floyd and for over twenty five years by the firm of Herring and Floyd (consisting of Silas C. Herring and James R. Floyd) and made and furnished by the succeeding firms of James R Floyd and James R Floyd and Sons, for the safe manufacturers, Herring & Co. of New York and Farrel & Co. of Philadelphia.

We further agree that the said Franklinite Iron shall be of the same character and stand the same tests as that heretofore made by us for the "Herring Patent Burglar-Proof Safe".

Yours Truly:
James R. Floyd & Sons

So, Doug, I would say that Remington & Sherman was almost an "extension" of Herring & Co, Farrel & Co etc.

What do you think?

Dave
