Bill: A four foot thick door was not unheard of but not common due to cost of manufacturing and installation. I know where there's one door of nearly four feet thick in my area. It's been long out of use for at least two to three decades probably due to door sag. Over the years there had to have been other problems with the door since several of the 20 plus door bolts were removed when I first saw the door about 1989 or 1990. This particular door was manufactured by Remington and Sherman and was of "Holmes Design". Holmes designed many of his vaults to have the combination locks built into the frame of the vault and not into the vault door. Holmes Design vaults are a rarity but I know where at least four are of which only one is in actual use. I've also been lucky enough to collect a couple of combination locks from Holmes Design vaults and to photograph these vaults. Unfortunately pics can no longer be placed on the public forum due to problems. Dave LaBarge |
