Remington & Sherman Crain Hinge Vault Door

Posted by Henry Illinois on October 23, 2007 at 13:06:56:

I have what I think is a Remington & Sherman Crain Hinge Vault Door from the late 1800's.
It has some surface rust on it because it was rained on while the Bank it was being removed from was tore down. Also someone broke the glass and removed the brass timers out of the back of the door.
It has a big spoked wheel on the outside and two combination dials.
It is at least 6 foot at the opening the door is mounted on a frame or "vestibule" that is about 4 foot deep, this has a pair of doors with 2 combination dials that have been removed and are resting next to the safe (one has a broken hinge.
My questions:
I am building a new house and would like to set this in the basement as a wine cellar door.
1.What is the best attachment system to keep it from falling over when the door opens. (It weighs about 8 tons)
We have not poured concrete for the basement yet.
2. What is the best way to remove rust/surface rust off the door and polish the steel?
3. How do I remove the pins that were deployed when the glass was broken?
4. How do I level the safe so the door does not swing open or swings shut etc.
5. Are their any comon problems with these old vaults that I should look for? (I heard that the hinges were set in babbit and could be a problem)
6. We plan on welding a loop on the top of the vestibule and setting the assembly in with a crane.
7. Someone told be that it could have teargas inside the door so to be careful when I take the access cover off, is this true?
