Try Dave Fullarton at Safe Works in Baltimore. He's in the book. When looking in the phone book for safe service, look under the "Safe" heading first, "Locksmith" heading if you can't find a safeman. Some locksmiths are top notch safemen, but many who aren't will still accept the call and waste your time or worse. If safe serial numbers gave clues to the combinations there wouldn't be much point in having a safe. Some safe makers record the original settings on safes, but the general understanding is that a safe should have a proper combination set when put into use. Also, reset periodically through its useful life. Some safemen manipulate (open without drilling for lost combinations) before resorting to drilling, some just drill and repair. Manipulation is best, but drilling and repairing does not ruin a safe if done properly. However, you won't gain anything but an annoyed safeman by trying to dictate the opening method of the safeman you hire. You buy the result not the process. Believe me, if your chosen safeman is a manipulator you won't have to ask him to manipulate. Manipulators want their effort to be successful even more than the safe owner does, but it's not the end of the world or the safe if the lock is not cooperating with a manipulator and needs to be drilled, then repaired. Good luck. |
