Hi Doug:

I know of the Yale safes you mention from the late 1800's. A friend about 100 miles south of me has one, I looked up my pics I took of it in 1995. He had this before the S&VT story about the Yale safe in Tennesee you mention but I never sent anything in about it until shortly after the original story. I think it was mentioned the following month or two. I do think the safe is older than the late 1800's though. The body and paint styles, the roller bolt style lock, although a screw change roller bolt, lead me to believe it's more from the 1860's timeframe. It's also a "skeleton" type of safe that uses a flat type locking bar instead of round bolts.

I've never seen the ones you mention in the Ledger from the 1950's...I'll have to check some old mags when I get time.

Too bad you don't go on the other side... you would have seen my write-up on visiting the Yale Octagonal house in Newport, NY back in May. I even found Linus Yale Sr.'s tombstone...Jr's no where to be found... Get me your email address and I'll send you some pics.

Dave
