Start anywhere, no need to turn the dial a bunch of times to get the lock in the mood.

Use the mark at 12:00 for dialing.

You might be counting turns incorrectly.
Count "times TO the number," NOT times past it.

The final turn to unlock is what pulls the lock bolt after the correct numbers are dialed correctly.

The dial should come to a dead stop on the final turn to unlock. Neither "0" or "100" is significant (not a starting point or a reference point unless it's a combination number.

If you continnue to have problems hire a safe technician to sort them out. It will be worth the money. You should probably do that anyway, since most safes in homes go for very long stretches without service.

Yes, safes need service.
