How to open safe

I'm trying with no luck to open the safe in my home, it is a Chubb Taylow Mosler safe. The instructions I was left with indicate: right 5x to xx left 4x to xx right 3x to xx left 2x to xx right to unlock My questions are: Does it matter where I start the rotations? Where do I go after the left 2x or, what does right to unlock mean? I didn't think it would be so difficult! The owner left the combo taped to the side of the safe for us and I'm finally trying it after a year of living here, we're stumped. There is also a notch in the metal (above the number dial) slightly to the left of the 12:00 position, does it have something to do with the opening process? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
