Start by looking in the Yellow Pages for larger metro areas under "safes." Most safe companies have at least one (usually more) working but outdated older unit they've hauled away when selling and placing a newer one. Decide what you are willing to spend before beginning your search. Values (or I should say selling prices) for old safes are all over the map, and there is no Blue Book on them. Antiques Road Show is essentially clueless in this area. Owing to expenses involved in moving, storing, opening, repairing, identifying, and restoring them, antique safes have traditionally (mostly)been avoided by antique dealers. If you appreciate nicely restored older safes but can't find a suitable one in your locale, you might try contacting Bob Stabley at LA Safe in Pomona, CA. He does a very nice job of restoring selected safes, can show you photos of his past work and current offerings, and can also prep for shipping if you decide you want something he has for sale. |
